Olympic Issues

Lindsey Jacobellis

I've been watching the Olympic games every day that they've been on now and although I've really enjoyed them, most of the events have been less than memorable. By that I mean I watch and applaud or grimace at the event when it happens and then about 30 seconds later I've forgotten about it. Except for yesterday's women's snowboarding event. American Lindsey Jacobellis was considered the best female snowboarder in the world and was predicted to take the gold medal in her race yesterday...but didn't. She was so far out in front of her competition during the medal race that the other girls weren't even in the picture. And then on the last bumpy thing she did a little showboating, wiped out and the Swiss girl (who was in 4th place and waaaay far back)passed by her and took the gold medal. For some reason this whole scene of events has stuck with me ever since I witnessed it. Normally I hate it when athletes show off; football players who start their dance before they get to the end zone, basketball players who slam dunk, baseball players making one-handed catches. But Jacobellis didn't just screw herself and her team, she let America down. She was out there competing not for Casey the Tigers fan, but for Casey the American and it kinda makes me mad. Normally I'd say "she got what she deserves," but as the person she's representing I think I was short-changed and deserve something more. I'm sure, in time, I'll forget about this just like every other missed chance for an American Olympic gold medal has passed from my memory, but for right now it stings a bit and I feel cheated.

Maybe if you were a Yankees Fan you wouldn't feel so short changed.
