eulogy

Shannon, my first dog ever, peacefully passed away early this morning. She had been seriously ill for about 3 weeks ~ we only found out in the last few days that the cause was due to a tumor in her spleen that had more than likely spread. I was going to make the very difficult decision to call the vet later today in order to make “arrangements.” I think she knew that I was pain, too, and took care of it for me.

Shannon came into our lives on Valentine’s Day, 2001. From the very beginning I said “no dog!” Fortunately this turned out to be yet another battle I would lose. Over the years, our love for each other blossomed.

With her around, I became a better person. She taught me how to be a little more patient, a little more flexible, and to appreciate the beauty in a dirty tennis ball.

Shannon loved car rides and playing in dirty water. She liked pizza, laying next to the couch, and laying in front of the fireplace. She liked listening to the Tigers on the radio on warm summer evenings, and making snow angels on chilly winter mornings. She loved the kitties.

I know she’s in a better place now ~ a place where she doesn’t need a ramp to get into the Jeep, and where baths aren’t required. And I know that the time we spent together here was filled with love. But how I long for just one more wet kiss, one more game of “Where’s Shannon?” and just one more summer evening in the backyard.

Shannon Banana, you were the best dog ever.

Dear Casey,

I came here to wish you a belated Merry Christmas and now I see that Shannon has passed. I am crying for your loss.

We have lost four dogs and a cat in our married life. It is so hard every time.

I can tell she had a loving home with you and Vic.

Oh, Casey and Vic, I am so sorry for your loss. May I light a candle for Shannon?

Oh honey, I'm so sorry. My heart is just breaking for you and Vic right now. But I know one thing, there's not a dog in the world that was more loved than Shannon. We should all be so lucky...My thoughts are with you both
