Happy New Year Everyone!

This upcoming weekend is going to be the end of one year & the beginning of another...and Vic & I are going to try to finish up one last house project before 2006 is up! Our plan is to finally install the screen door on the back door and finish the "finishing" part of the door frame. Both of these little tasks are cosmetic, which accounts for them taking almost a year to complete. I guess since there was really no rush to finish, we didn't rush. I'm also hoping for some pleasant non-rainy weather so I can chop some more firewood. And of course there's the trip to Windsor on Sunday, so I think our weekend dance card is going to be pretty full. For some reason this week really dragged, so I'm looking forward to this weekend. And I took off on Monday, so it'll be a three day weekend. Yea!

3 Dozen Things

For today's blog, I'd like to share with you some of the reflections that randomly drift thru the waters of my mind. My internal canoe tips over from time to time due to the raging thought rapids of my inner psyche, but like a well-balanced kayak, my canoe eventually rights itself again. So, a little insight into me...

Stuff I wouldn't buy even if I had all the money in the world:
- That dumb Sleep Number bed that the Bionic Woman tries to sell me every day on late night TV
- Anything by John Basedow, fitness celebrity
- Any of the Girls Gone Wild videos
- Rogaine
- Cialis
- That goofy looking Bowflex Treadclimber thing
- A Volvo
- Jessica Simpson cds
- Cans of deer pee ~ the guys at work actually had an in-depth conversation on which particular brands were the best & how to properly spray them to attract deers
- Tongue piercings
- Stilletto heels

Traveling
- Thailand, Cambodia, Viet Nam, Iraq, Iran or any of the -stan countries of the Middle East are just a few of the countries I have no desire to ever visit
- Of all the states I've lived in, I think Michigan is the prettiest overall
- Of all the states I've lived in, I think Mississippi sucks ass
- The very first foreign city I ever went to was Frankfurt, Germany
- The last foreign city I've been to was Windsor, Canada
- Now having to pay for the crappy airplane meals just plain sucks
- I thought British flight attendants would be friendlier than US flight attendants ~ geez, was I ever wrong
- The first time I ever flew, I was 12 and I sat in first class ~ I didn't know enough to appreciate it

Entertainment
- I miss the blonde DA on Law & Order ~ I wish she'd come back
- I really like Judi Dench & Helen Mirren in everything they've ever acted in
- Kathy Griffin is hysterical
- Rosie O'Donnell is annoying
- Cate Blanchett could do a 2-hour movie of nothing but her reading the phone book and get nominated for an Academy Award ~ and she'd still be better than any of her competition!
- Billy Bob Thornton is under-appreciated
- Inside The Actors Studio is a sell-out ~ the Actor's Studio teaches the Method form of acting, but yet about 85% of the "actors" on their show are either not Method actors or aren't actors at all (this pisses me off)
- Drew Barrymore seems like a very nice person & a lot of fun to work with
- Justin Timberlake leaves me with a dumbfounded look on my face
- Although I don't really care for Anne Hache, I really like her new TV show, Men In Trees ~ it's kind of a quirky Northern Exposure ripoff
- I hate reality shows about dancers, models, chefs, people wanting to lose weight, people wanting to find a date, people who eat bugs or people opening luggage
- What the hell happened to Howie Mandell?
- I really like Grey's Anatomy not so much for the typical soap opera storyline, but more for the actors ~ I especially like Sandra Oh & the woman who plays Addison. And, coincidentally, Sandra Oh & Addison played lezzbian lovers in Under the Tuscan Sun
- There aren't a whole lot of male actors I like ~ the exception to this is Kevin Kline, Philip Seymour Hoffman and William H. Macy
- I really like the happy California cow commercial where they're playing Marco Polo
- Cameron Diaz & Gwyneth Paltrow need to gain weight
- I like Megan Mullally when she was Karen on Will & Grace, but not so much now

Happy Boxing Day! (Unless you're a Welsh servant girl)

I hate to sound bah-humbugish, but I'm kinda glad Christmas is over. I always get nice stuff and I love the lights and the songs, but Vic & I always spend way tooo much money and then I stress about it for months afterward. We finally got in a position where all our credit cards were paid off and then stupid-head Christmas rolls around again! My goal is to have them all paid off again by the start of Spring. Other than the whole money thing, Christmas seems to have gone pretty well. We spent the weekend with Vic's mom opening presents and having two dinners (Sunday & Monday), the puppy & kitty we were babysitting went home Sunday (much to Shannon's relief!) and now our house is starting to get back to normal again. We have one more holiday trip planned ~ this weekend we are going to Canada celebrate with Vic's aunt. We had a great time the last time we were there ~ she's got lots of cows & chickens!

So I noticed today is Boxing Day and I realized that although I've heard of it all my life, I really didn't know much about it. So I looked it up! Just as I suspected, there are several different views on how Boxing Day got its name, most of them centering around boxes. The one I ran across most often was the belief that servants long ago had to work on Christmas day and the day after were allowed to "box" up the leftovers and take them home to their families. How very decent of the rich people. I also came across the very odd Welsh custom..."As in most of the rest of the UK and Ireland, the day after Christmas Day was always most significant in the day-to-day events of Wales. Some activities that took place on this day seem peculiarly Welsh, including that of "holly-beating" or "holming." In this, it was customary for young men and boys to slash the unprotected arms of female domestic servants with holly branches until they bled." We've come a long way, baby.

I had to put off my scrapbooking for the last couple of days in order to concentrate on gift wrapping and puppy babysitting, but I'm hoping to dive back into it again today or tomorrow. Also, I've been working on the same cross-stitch project since about September. I'm hoping to complete that before starting back to school next week. And I just finished "The 5th Horseman" by James Patterson this morning. I think it's the best book yet in his Women's Murder Club series. I'm hoping I can squeeze in another short book in the next week. I've really been enjoying this little break from school. I miss reading for pleasure. I used to start a new book about every 3 weeks or so and the one I just finished is the first book I've picked up since the start of September! Sometimes being scholastic sucks. Oh well. I think I'm going to go hit the treadmill for a few miles. I've watched a ton of movies while getting buff; usually in 30-45 minute blocks. I'm currently watching "Pride & Prejudice" with Colin Firth. He's just rebuffed Lizzie and pissed off her mom by not dancing with any of the Bennett girls at the big shindig. What will happen next?? (I've seen the movie several times and recently re-read the book, so I know what's going to happen ~ I was just trying to be cryptic. Did it work?)

Mildly Interesting Me

Have you ever watched "Charmed?" It's on TNT every day for two hours ~ the first two hours that I'm awake. My day usually starts around 4ish, just before Vic leaves for work. After she's gone, I spend the first few hours of my day catching up on bills or other house-related stuff that needs to get done and while I'm doing this "Charmed" is on the TV. I've seen about 15 or 20 mins. of just about every episode, but never actually sat down and watched a full complete show. I mention this because I find it interesting that I can follow an entire series of a show by only watching snippets of each lame episode. And not even really watching, it's more like absorbing background noise. It's also somewhat interesting that there are heaps of shows I've only ever seen (or mostly seen) in syndication; Friends, Raymond, Law & Order. Just something mildly interesting about me I wanted to share. Oh, and I really like that Holly Marie Combs on "Charmed." She's the smart one ~ kinda like Kate Jackson used to be on "Charlies Angels."

What is one of your Christmas traditions?
Listening to Vic ask if we can "just open one" for the entire month of December.

That would be Vic. She always gives me a list with dozens of ideas on it. Usually in October.

Salad
What is your favorite Christmas scent?
Christmas tree scented candles.

Main Course
If you could give a fellow blogger a Christmas gift, who would it be and what would you give them?
I'd give Shawn a new job.

Dessert
What's something on your Christmas wish list this year that you need (not just want)?
I'm with Shawn, I really need a new job. One that I not only like, but that pays well, has great benefits and, most importantly, one where my coworkers and I get along famously.

Good News

I went to the hospital today for what I assumed would be my biopsy, but turned out to be more xrays. The radiologist determined that what was showing up on the films was some scar tissue and that a biopsy wouldn't be necessary after all. Yea! What a relief for both me & Vic.

Some friends went to Chicago for the Christmas weekend and we are babysitting while they are away. They left us their kitty, a perfect little ball of white fluff that loves to be held and snuggle with you during naptime...and they also left us their puppy. Abbie is a chocolate Lab, about 5 months old and loves to bark loudly at every fucking thing. She also inhales food, has to drag out every toy in the house, circle your feet when you walk and bounces off the walls. She won't give poor Shannon a peaceful moment. Our house isn't used to having a puppy in it. We operate more along the speed of "lay in front of the TV and don't move for hours." It's only for the weekend and we really don't mind having her, but I've gotten no sleep and I'm very cranky and right now I'd like to lock her in the basement. Lucky for Abbie, we don't have a basement. I miss my quiet solitude.

The Long Weekend

Let's start with Friday...I had a great Friday even though my day included a trip to the doctor where she told me what I was dreading ~ I'll have to have a biopsy on my right breast to make sure what's showing up on the xray isn't cancerous. The radiologist is supposed to call with an appointment sometime this week, so hopefully I can get all this completed before the new year. The rest of my day was great, tho! Vic & I had Mexicans for lunch, did a little light shopping and then came home where she took a nap and I ran a couple of treadmill miles and worked on the scrapbook for a while. What made this day so grand was that nowhere in there did I have to do anything work-related. No getting the uniform ready for work or preparing my lunch for work or taking a nap so I won't fall asleep at work ~ no work anything! I love knowing that my day is all mine to do with what I want and that I don't have to rush or curtail something because I have to go to work. I soooo absolutely hate going to work. If I could find a nice stay-at-home job I would be extremely, blissfully happy. I just hate dealing with rude people, both on the phone and at work. I would much rather work with kitties and some nice Celtic music playing softly in the background.

Vic & I spent all day Saturday shopping & lunching with her mom. We really don't spend enough time doing stuff like this with her because she's always so busy with church or library stuff. The rest of the weekend we mostly just hung out around the house. I got about 4 pages done in the London scrapbook, chopped a slew of firewood & cleaned some crap out of the garage while Vic tidied up the inside of the house. The cold months are great for getting stuff done around the house. We're going to try to paint the living room and our bedroom before Spring and we need to do a few minor repairs to some stuff around the outside of the house, too. We've been fortunate that we haven't really had any snow yet, but I'm sure this won't last forever, so I'd like to get as much done outside as we can.

My Lofty Goal

On this date, 41 years ago, a star twinkled brightly over the little town of Cleveland and then "ta-da" there I was! I'm still here, only I moved a little to the left of Cleveland and am now in sunny Michigan. I'm spending my birthday at work, but I took Friday off in celebration of the blessed event so that I could have a 3-day weekend. Friday is also the day I go to the doctor about my abnormal mammogram, so I figured I would probably need to take the night off. She's supposed to let me know whether or not a biopsy is going to be necessary. I'm hoping not.

My grades were posted online today and I got an "A" in both of my classes (yea!). I haven't started on my scrapbooking mission yet, but that's only because I've been busy reorganizing the new craft/workout room. I had to move my scrapbook table to make room for the new treadmill. The room is now divided into 2 halves ~ the creative side and the buff side. Soon Vic & I will be buff bathing beauties. I can't wait! I am determined to get scrappy this evening. I mean it! My short term life goal is to get that London scrapbook completed before I start school on January 9th. I really mean it!

BTW...did you know that Bob Barker, Donny Osmond and the chick who played Blossom all share my birthday? I wonder if they had twinkling stars, too.

My First Choice Was Olive Garden...

I finally got all my Christmas presents wrapped & put under the tree. Well, actually around the tree, because we have a little Christmas tree in a pot sitting on a table. It's killing Vic not to be able to open them NOW. Ha ha. I think we're probably going to celebrate the birth of the sweet baby Casey this weekend (the actual day is Tuesday). I'm sure we'll just go out to eat somewhere and then relax at home ~ which sounds great to me. Vic will probably ask me where I want to go to eat & then do that wrinkly face thing at my first two choices and this will lead to us going where she wants to go. It's just so much easier to just give in.

Appetizer
Which language would you like to learn and why?
Gaelic. I'd like to go back to Ireland & be able to read the signs & sing in the pubs.

Soup
What's the funniest thing you've heard or read so far this week?
I never watched any of Dave Chappelle's show when it was on and the other night one of the guys at work was telling me about it, so I pulled up a video of one of the skits. We were rolling!

Salad
Which movie was so bad you couldn't watch the whole thing?
That Anne Rice movie with Tom Cruise & Brad Pitt where they're vampires. I tried THREE times to watch & fell asleep all three times. The third time my ears actually started to bleed from the sheer anality (is that a word??) of it.

Main Course
If there were a holiday in your honor that didn't use your actual name, what would the day be called?
How 'bout Festivus. It's the holiday for the rest of us!

Dessert
Name one movie which is coming out soon that you would like to see.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

I Wonder If Julie Knows??

Burger King

Today was my last day of school ~ yea! On my way to class I wanted to stop by the grocery store to pick up a few items and I figured that if I'm going to go food shopping I'd better eat something first or else I'd buy an entire chicken or something. So I decided to give Burger King a try and here are a few observations on my dinner with the King...
* Where has customer interaction gone? The only thing Laquita had to say to me was "You want cheese on that?" She was far too busy to greet me or say thank you. She was in a deeply intellectual conversation with her coworkers about how they all dislike Julie. Apparently Julie is just bad news no matter how you look at it.
* The Christmas music gave me the opportunity to hear not only "Dominick the Christmas Donkey" but also the Muppets version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas." I forgot just how much I love Beeker's rendition of nine ladies dancing.
* I got plenty of quiet time to study before my final. Nobody was in the place, so there were no annoying conversations to have to contend with. The Julie debate was taking place behind the counter and far away from my little table.
* I like the onion rings better than the fries. I like anything you can dink into some kind've sauce.

I think I did pretty well on my Speech final, but either way, I'm just glad school is over for a while. I'm going to use this time to catch up on scrapbooking and reading. I haven't read a non-school book in three months and I could use a little fluff. So I plan on being fluffy until at least January 9th (when school starts back up).

One Down...

...and one to go. Last night I had my Medical Term. final and Thursday night will be my final in Speech and then I'll be all done for 4 glorious, class-free weeks. I plan on using those weeks to work on my scrapbooking. The goal is to finally get the London book completed. This March will be 2 years since we went, so I'm just a tooch behind. I think once I get started, it should roll along pretty smoothly. I hope. The plan is to get all the Christmas gifts out of the craft room and wrapped, so that I can start scrapping. Hopefully I can get this accomplished on Friday. Until then, I'll be studying for my last test. Wish me luck!

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow

Nose Mitten

Vic has been very, very excited about us getting snow and when we finally do get some, she's at work. Bummer for her, but Shannon & I got to enjoy some of it before retiring to the warmth of the fireplace. Still not enough for a snowperson, but the weather guy says it's supposed to continue snowing all week, so maybe we'll have enough "sticky" snow to make one by the weekend. Speaking of the weekend...we finally got the gutters cleaned out (just in time, too!) and the rest of the outside stuff put away this past weekend. We were going to put up some more Christmas/Casey's Birthday decorations, but we were just too tired to mess with all those boxes. We'll tackle it next weekend. We have a few colored lights on the Christmas tree in our front yard and a kind've swirly light tree on the front lawn, so I think we'll be okay for another week.

Birthday Month

This is the month of mine and the Sweet Baby Jesus' birthdays. Somehow mine always seems to be overshadowed, though ~ I've gotten used to it.
Jury duty was an overwhelming letdown. There were 161 of us and not a one was called for anything. Eight hours stuck in a room full of strangers. Well, at least I got all my studying done for my upcoming finals and I didn't have to go to work. Any day not working is a good day!
This weekend Vic & I are going to put up our Christmas/Casey's Birthday decorations. It's supposed to snow all week, so the house will look nice with colored blinky lights reflecting off of fluffy white snowbanks. Hopefully we'll get enough to make a snowperson!
