Oscar

Every year I try to watch at least one or two past Best Picture winners that I haven't seen before during TCM's 31 Days of Oscar. This was the first year I didn't reach my goal. I did, however, see Juno, which turned out to be a great movie. I don't think it was Academy Award winning great (and neither did the academy either), but it was still a cute movie. Now I can't wait for No Country For Old Men and Atonement to come out on DVD.

Mom & I actually watched the whole Oscar telecast together last night. No stupid Ty Pennington! Vic stayed home sick, so it was just her mom & me. Vic has a nasty upper respiratory infection and a case of bronchitis. After some good drugs, she's finally napping. Poor thing.

A Rainbow of Current Events

* Vic's mom is back home and making Vickie crazy, so she must be feeling better! This means the days of sleeping in my own bed have come to an abrupt halt. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

* Speaking of sleeping in my own bed...it's been so long since I've slept here that I forgot how to work the alarm clock. Friday morning, when it went off, I thought I hit the snooze button. In fact, I actually hit the wake-up-10 minutes-before-you-have-to-be-to-work button. I was a bit tardy Friday morning.

* Did you know that there is more traffic on the road when you are running late?

* Success ~ I got my taxes completed Thursday night! Only took me about 2 hours with Turbo Tax, a nice fire and some soothing classical music. I mailed the tax forms in ~ I'm just not a big fan of the very expensive E-File thing. I guess if I needed the money right now I'd e-file, but I don't, so I didn't.

* The Academy Awards are this weekend. This used to be a big deal to me, but since I hardly ever go to the movies anymore, it's not such a biggie. This means I'll probably spend the evening in agony watching that incredibly dumb Extreme Makeover-Home Edition show with the equally annoying Ty Pennington. Mom loves it. I usually take a bath or look for chopsticks to poke my eyes out with for the excrutiating 2 hours it's on. Two freaking hours!

* I got Vic a TomTom for Valentine's Day. Actually it was the day after Valentine's Day, so I guess I really got her the TomTom for Friday, not Valentine's Day. Anyway, she's been whining about wanting one since before Thanksgiving and I saw it on sale so there you go. Now we have the dulcet-toned Mandy telling us to "turn right in 500 yards." This really comes in handy when I can't remember how to get from my driveway to the end of the street. I'm looking forward to actually leaving the neighborhood so we can really test her mapping abilities!

A Cloud

Bad news: Vic's mom was re-admitted to the hospital late Tuesday night. She is suffering from dehydration and infections to her urinary tract, bladder and possibly her kidneys. The doctor thinks she should be released tomorrow, but we'll see. She's really in a lot of lower back pain and since she's allergic to many painkillers, it's been really difficult to alleviate her pain. Poor thing.

Silver lining: Tuesday night was the first night in about 8 weeks that I got to sleep in my own bed! I know Shannon loves having us home for these last couple of days. Tonight will be the first night I actually get to sit in my own living room and watch reruns on my own TV. Maybe I'll watch one of the Jane Austen movies I DVD'd off of Masterpiece Theatre!

Happy Family Day

Happy President's Day! A day in which we celebrate some guys who got to be leader of the free world because their daddy had more money than the other guy's daddy. In Canada the Canadians are celebrating Family Day. I'm not sure what all that entails, but I'll bet they're having huge discounts on big screen TVs and recliners just like us! I like the idea of Family Day. I think we should all take a day off to be with our families, whether it's the wife & kids or the girlfriend & dog. And I think everybody should have the day off, not just the mailman and the bank lady. I think the entire U.S. economy should come to a screaching halt on Family Day. Absolutely no businesses should be open ~ only cops, fireguys and hospitals are open. Everybody else has to just sit at their house and read a book ~ by candlelight, because the electricity dude is also off. Doesn't that sound wonderful. And peaceful. And really cold. Family Day should be during a nice Autumn month and definitely not during February. And it should be a paid holiday! Happy Family Day everyone!

Snake & Cupcakes

No, scratch that last observation. Do snakes like pizza?

I entered a Valentine's Day treat contest at work today and won! I took red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and little red sprinkles. My part in the baking of the cupcakes was limited to the actual carrying of the cupcakes from the car to the building. Vic's mom did the actual baking of the cakes. I of course took full credit for the winning entry and claimed my prize of a gift card to Chili's with unabashed glee! Very snakey, eh?

Snow

Remember how I said that Wednesday sounds like a good day to do my taxes? Wrong! Wednesday was actually the perfect day for abou 3' of snow to drop from the sky in the form of a raging blizzard. I spent the first part of my night stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic going at a top speed of 10 mph all the way to Mom's house. The second part of the night was spent shoveling Mom's driveway so I'd have some place to park my Jeep. This is what we get for moving to Michigan, I guess.

Garbage Can Trauma

When Vic & I moved into our new house almost 3 years ago, one of the very first items we bought for it was 2 new garbage cans. They were lovely, green and plastic, with locking green lids and black plastic handles & wheels to make the weekly haul to the curb oh-so convenient. It didn't take long to "muck" them up, though. First our ever-helpful neighbor did us a "favor" by spraypainting our house numbers unevenly all over the cans in bright shiny silver. Then the inside of the cans themselves just got icky over time from assorted trash yuck. But through it all, we had our locking lids. Actually we were the only house on the street that still had the lids for their garbage cans. Vickie was quite proud of this and very adament that we continue to use the garbage-keeper-inners. That all changed last week.

Last Wednesday morning it was very windy and since it's some sort of garbageman sin to actually replace the lid on a garbage can, the cast-aside lids disappeared to places unknown. Well, actually only one disappeared to places unknown. I ran over the other one, squashing it like a big lid bug. The wind blew it across the driveway as I was backing out to go to work. Since I was running late, I didn't stop to pick the dead lid carcass up. I hoped that the gusts would carry it away and I could just blame it all on the garbagemen. So of course that stupid squashed lid sat in our yard all day just waiting for Vickie to come home and tattle on me! I shoulda just took the damn thing to work with me and tossed it in the dumpster.

It's still sitting in our garage. I don't dare through it out.

Just Some Goings-On

Vic & I will be spending all day Super Bowl Sunday at her mom's house. Since we'll be there all day, Shannon gets to come with us. Yea! I washed her blankies and will pack her a nice little overnight bag and then we'll all head out in a few hours. I never really realized just how much the kids miss us until we're both home for a few hours on the weekend. We each have a pile of kitties in our laps and Shannon at our feet. It's nice to be loved.

I think I'm going to try to tackle my taxes sometime this week. I don't know when, though. I'm shooting for Wednesday for some reason. I don't really know why I picked Wednesday...it just seems like a good tax day.

Work has gotten a lot better since I split my day up ~ mornings with the ignoring people and afternoons with the friendly fun people. I'm hoping for a permanent full-time gig with the fun people in the near future.

I haven't gotten my 90 day evaluation, or pay raise, yet at work, but they wasted no time in deducting my medical insurance from my paycheck. I figured that I would have to get a raise of at least $1.04 an hour just to break even with all the new deductions. I have no idea how much of a raise I'm entitled to, but hopefully I'll find out soon.

Has anyone else noticed the plethora of Tom Petty songs on the radio lately? I know he's playing the half-time show, but geez it seems like I hear a Tom Petty tune at least every hour now. Does he even have anything new coming out?

Speaking of the Super Bowl...Animal Planet has their own version called "Puppy Bowl." All day long they have puppy playing together in a miniature football stadium. They have water bowl cam and a kitty half-time show, too. There are also refs with pooper scoopers to call time outs when a puppy commits a "foul." It's really cute.
